What Is My IP Address?

The public address websites see when you connect.

What this shows

This is the public address exposed by your internet connection. Devices on the same router usually share it.

Privacy

The lookup is returned from the current request and is not saved by this tool. A VPN or proxy may change the address shown.

What your public IP reveals

Websites need your public IP to return data to your connection. It may identify your ISP and an approximate region, but it does not expose your name, exact address, passwords, or files. Devices sharing one router usually share the same public IPv4 address while keeping separate private addresses.

Public IP address FAQ

What is the difference between a public and private IP address?

Your public IP identifies your internet connection to websites. A private IP identifies one device inside your home or office network and is usually in a range such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x.

Why does my IP address change?

Most home and mobile connections use dynamic addresses. Your ISP may assign a new IP when your router reconnects, a lease renews, or your phone changes between Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

Why do I have IPv4 and IPv6 addresses?

Many networks use both protocols. IPv4 uses shorter dotted addresses, while IPv6 uses a much larger hexadecimal address space. Websites may see either one depending on the connection they use.

Can an IP address reveal my exact location?

No. IP-based location can suggest a country, region, or ISP, but it does not reveal a precise street address or GPS location.

Will a VPN change the IP shown here?

Yes. A VPN or proxy routes the request through another server, so this checker normally shows that server’s public IP instead of the address assigned directly by your ISP.
